It's a pleasure :D  — Adriaan (SB) 16:41, 18 Mei 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]

Lol it's ok. Don't worry about Morné. I don't think he likes anyone on here anyways.  — Adriaan (SB) 16:50, 18 Mei 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]

Contributing to improve en>af in Apertium[wysig bron]

Hi Francis,

I tried out your MT system and it looks like it might have potential. How would one go about helping to impove the system or develop translation in new language pairs? You mention in the geselshoekie that Dutch-Afrikaans should have potential. I would also be ionetrested in German-Afrikaans, particularly as the German Wikipedia is generally of good qualitry (often better than the Engelish equivalents). Does the online version have the latest language files?

BTW - why did your project choose shallow-transfer machine translation? There seems to be a lot of energy on Statitical Machine tranlation, could one benefit from some of that work in your approach? Laurens 07:06, 20 Mei 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]

I put a copy of this discussion in the Wikipedia:Geselshoekie, so that all current feedback on the MT system can be found in one place. Anrie 07:51, 20 Mei 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]

Hi, Francis,

Why did you move Roemeens? The current title doesn't comply with our titling policy. Anrie 14:46, 21 Mei 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]

Thanks for moving it back. The policy is basically just "Language name" ("German", "Dutch", etc.) and not "German language", "Dutch language", etc. There are, however, some articles that are named that way and which need to be corrected still. In some instances, where there is ambiguity, it is indicated as "Venda (taal)". Anrie 15:01, 21 Mei 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]

Core articles[wysig bron]

Hi Francis,

I see you've discovered my newly-begun translation of the core articles. I've stated in the introduction that it is by no means an authoritative list and is intended to aid users looking for an article to translate. I've added the composers and musicians today, if I manage to add a subsection every day, the whole things ought to be finished by, say, end of July. Please don't feel pressured to use it, though.

I'll keep an eye on your contributions for any new articles and try to have them "fixed" as soon as I can, although I've noticed that some of them really only require minor tweaking. Feel free to translate a bit more per article as well - if you find it to time-consuming to do the pre-publishing tweaks yourself, I'd love to help if I can. Anrie 09:41, 22 Mei 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]

Say no to automated translations, say yes to fair use :)[wysig bron]

I am against using wikipedia as an experimental platform for automated translations. --RM 20:31, 17 Augustus 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]

I was at hand when Francis posted his article on Archimedes, indeed, I suggested he do it: he won't ever post without me (or someone else) to "fix" an article immediately. I had first checked to make sure that the article was a faithful translation of the source text and will have continued to improve it stylistically immediately after that (but you jumped in before I got a chance :) ). Anrie 20:33, 17 Augustus 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]
Besides, given the time that he spent on it beforehand, I'd call it anything but automatic. Anrie 20:36, 17 Augustus 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]

Hi, Francis...

6 down, 1 to go: I'm writing my final exam this coming Thursday (the 8th) and was wondering if you'd like to meet up on IRC the Friday or Sunday afterwards (I'm not home on the Saturday) to attempt another translation? Anrie 16:47, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]

So the 9th or 11th, sounds good. I'll be there. Myself and User:Wynand.winterbach are working on Noordpool, but its slow work as we're trying to translate the whole article (if we are able to, that will give me a good amount of evaluation material to try and write an article). Feel free to choose any one you feel like working on :) - Francis Tyers 13:42, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]
Hmm... how do you feel about en:Battle of Normandy, or perhaps en:Russian Empire? The second is perhaps a bit on the short side, but both would be supporting my never-ending World War II article (I'm assuming we'd only translate the introductory summary). Of course, if you feel like something else entirely, you're more than welcome. Anrie 09:56, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]
Either would be fine, or both if you have the time. I can work on adding vocabulary through the week. - Francis Tyers 15:13, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]
Excellent! We can start with the longer one, perhaps, and if it goes well, we can see if we have the stomach for another one. I'll make a bilingual list of possible problematic words and then post them in your sandbox. Anrie 15:15, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]
I knocked this up quickly, it will probably work: here, it allows you to paste in text, and it will give you the missing words from the en-af dictionary. It isn't all that needs to be done, but it is a start. If you're going to make a list, might as well make it in Apertium format :) - Francis Tyers 22:50, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[antwoord]
