Tee
Tee (Engels: tea; Nederlands: thee; Duits: Tee; Sjinees: 茶 chá) is 'n warm drank wat uit die gedroogde blare van die teestruik Camellia sinensis berei word.[1]
Die oorsprong van die teestruik is nie meer bepaalbaar nie. Waarskynlik stam die struik uit suidwes Sjina, Assam of Kambodja. Deesdae word daar onderskei tussen twee oorspronklike teestruike:
- Sjinese teestruik Camellia sinensis
- Assamse teestruik Camellia assamica
Camellia is die latiniseerde naam van die eerw. Georg Joseph Kamel[2] (1661-1706). Kamel was 'n Tjeggiese jesuiët, farmaseut en sendeling op die Filippyne. Die Sweedse dokter, plantkundige en bioloog Carolus Linnaeus het die naam gekies om Kamel se bydrae tot die plantkunde te eer.[3] Alhoewel Kamel die struik nie ontdek het nie[4] en Linneaus die teestruik as Thea beskou het.[5] Dit was die Engelse plantkundige Robert Sweet (1783-1835) wat al soorte van Thea na die klas Camellia verskuif het.[6] Die naam sinensis is die Latynse vorm vir Sjinees.
