Die aanlyn-uitgawe van die betrokke nommer, wat in 1974 kort ná Cass Elliot se afsterwe gepubliseer is, vermeld nog steeds die toebroodjie-storie. 'n Jong ma en wonderlike vrou, wat toevallig oorgewig is, sterf in Londen - en ons kry net daardie soort kommentare.
When found, the presiding pathologist noticed that a ham sandwich sat next to her bed and commented on the possibility of her having choked on an item of food. He neglected to mention that the ham sandwich was untouched, but the careless comment set off an enduring mythology that Cass Elliot, the glutton, choked on her own food as a result of her voracious appetite. Leaping to such a conclusion not only suggested that the “ambulance chaser” portion of the wider audience was delighted in latching on to such a tidbit of gossip, but that the public view of obesity had not yet advanced past its infantile stage of enlightenment by the 1970s.
