Jerome David Salinger (1 Januarie 1919 – 27 Januarie 2010) was 'n Amerikaanse skrywer. Hy is veral bekend vir sy 1951-roman getiteld The Catcher in the Rye. Salinger het verskeie kortverhale gepubliseer in die tydskrif Story in 1940, voordat hy diens gedoen het in die Tweede Wêreldoorlog.[1] In 1948 het sy krities bekroonde verhaal "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" verskyn in The New Yorker, wat baie van sy latere werk gepubliseer het.[2][3]
The Catcher in the Rye (1951) was 'n onmiddellike sukses; Salinger se uitbeelding van adolessente vervreemding en die verlies van onskuld was invloedryk op veral jong lesers.[4] Die roman is wyd gelees en was baie kontroversieel[a]. Salinger se laaste gepubliseerde werk, die novelle Hapworth 16, 1924, het op 19 Junie 1965 verskyn in The New Yorker.
Hierna het Salinger 'n stryd gevoer teen ongeoorloofde aandag, insluitende 'n regstryd in die 1980's teen die biograaf Ian Hamilton en die uitreiking in die laat-1990's van memoirs geskryf deur twee persone met wie hy nouliks verbind was: sy voormalige minnares Joyce Maynard, en sy dogter Margaret Salinger.
