Opsomming

Beskrywing
English: Map of Johannesburg dated 1890 (four years after the discovery of gold and the founding of the city). The area highlighted in yellow shows north-south streets having a "kink" when they cross Bree Street. It has been suggested[1] that this was due to Cape feet being used by the surveyors who laid out the area north of Bree Street and English feet being used south of Bree Street. (1.033 English feet = 1 Cape foot). This has however been denied by historian GA Leyds (nephew of the former South African Republic State Attorney W.J. Leyds).[2]
