John Stuart Mill

John Stuart Mill (Pentonville, 20 Mei 1806Avignon, 8 Mei 1873) was 'n Engelse filosoof en ekonoom. Hy was 'n voorstander van die utilitarisme, die etiese teorie wat voorgestel word deur sy peetoom Jeremy Bentham. Sy eie variasie hiervan beskryf hy in die werk Utilitarianism, waarmee hy aanvoer dat daar 'n onderskeid gemaak moet word tussen verskillende soorte genot. In sy bekendste werk On Liberty sit hy die skadebeginsel uiteen. Die skadebeginsel is die opvatting dat iemand se vryheid slegs beperk mag word in so ver dit nodig is om te verhinder dat hy/sy ander skade aanrig.

Jeug

John Stuart Mill word gebore in sy vader se huis in Pentonville, Londen, as die oudste seun van James Mill en Harriet Burrow. Sy vader onderrig hom tuis, met advies en hulp van van Jeremy Bentham en Francis Place. Hy kry 'n streng opvoeding en word weggehou van ander jongmense van sy ouderdom. Sy vader, 'n navolger van Bentham, het as spesifieke doel om 'n geniaale intellek te skep wat die doelwitte en uitvoering van die utilisme sou kon voortsit na die dood van Bentham en homself.

Teen die tyd dat hy drie was kon hy die Griekse alfabet opsê, en toe hy agt word het hy Aesopus se 'fabels' gelees en dra hy kennis van Plato. In 1818 begin hy met 'n studie van logika en die jaar daarop begin hy politieke ekonomie te bestudeer.

Werk

Hy publiseer sy eerste belangrike boek in 1843, A System of Logic. Hierin is die beginsel van oorsaaklikheid aangespreek naamlik: as A altyd deur B gevolg word, kan veronderstel word dat dit in die toekoms ook altyd so sal wees.

Sy Principles of Political Economy (1848) word één van die belangrikste naslaanwerke op die gebied van ekonomie, en was bvvoorbeeld tot in 1919 die standaard teksboek van die opleiding ekonomie aan die Oxford Universiteit.

In 1869 publiseer hy Subjection of Women, waarin hy vroueregte verdedig. Hy was toe al vier jaar lid van die parlement, waar hy hom ook beywer vir vrouestemreg en liberale stantpunte steun.

Verhouding met Harriet Taylor

In 1851 trou Mill met Harriet Taylor Mill na 21 jaar se intieme vriendskap. Taylor was getroud toe hulle mekaar ontmoet het. Haar verhouding met Mill was heg maar kuis in die jare vóór haar eerste man sterf. Taylor was 'n belangryke invloed op die werk en die idees van Mill sowel tydens die jare van vriendskap as tydens hul huwelik. Nog voor hy haar ken was Mill al 'n verdediger van die vroueregte en dat word deur haar nog verder versterk. In sy laatste hersiening van On Liberty noem hy haar as sy belangrikste invloed en inspirasie vir die skryf van die boek, en dat dit in 'n groot mate ook haar idees weerspieël. On Liberty word kort na haar dood gepubliseer. Sewe jaar na haar huwelik met Mill sterf sy in 1858 nadat sy ernstige longontsteking opgedoen het.
