Mini-Wikimania a Venezia e Treviso

Ducks, ducks, ducks...

Note: Your baggage/luggage may be inspected by two curious Venetian ducks! Restricted items: kefir porridge & other duck food will be eaten right away!

Mini-Wikimania

Mini-Wikimania a Roma - Beplande program
  • Il Quattrocento a Roma
  • Toerprogram: Vatikaanstad, Ostia Antica, EUR
Mini-Wikimania a Roma - Oujaarsaand

Koljada / Nuwejaarsfees / Russies-Ortodokse Kersfees

Kunstenaars stel hul kuns ten toon

Hier kry ons Russiese Колядки (Koljadki)

Mini-Wikimania Roma

Toere

Quartiere Aurelio - die buurt waar ek bly as ek in Rome is.

Afrikaanse Wikipedia

Argitektuur in Suid-Afrika

Manlike deelnemers is nog steeds mal oor hul ECCLESIA Made in Italy-priesterhemde.

Korrupsie? Julle ken almal my rekening by die Banca Della Bergamasca Credito Cooperativo Soc. Coop.? Dan is dit moontlik net 24 uur.

Mud volcanoes, seismic activity and drift ice might threaten our Crimean bridge? Hey, you know what: Real men reside in Moscow, sissies live in Washington!
The 21st General Assembly of the Mud Volcano Proof Building Society is not quite convinced

Ha!

But seriously, folks - maybe Vladimir Putin puts more trust in dogs than in humans. Quoting from Prussian king Frederick the Great... Maybe Mrs. Merkel did not listen carefully...

Vladimir Putin's economic policies

One English and several German sources refer to it as Ordoliberalism. I understand this is a German term and concept. It may still be acceptable in the Putin article as the president is not only fluent in German, but may be interested in certain aspects of economics.

An article (published in 2008) with some interesting key points: Peterson Institute for International Economics: An Assessment of Putin's Economic Policy

According to the president, Russia is a «sovereign democracy». Critics may argue that he is the sovereign and thus the one who decides what kind of democracy Russia should have… LOL! Hilarious joke made by a Russian academic.

Corona updates

Amidst the corona panic buying - a precious wedding gift in Germany

South Korean research shows that young people between 20 and 29 may be «super spreaders» - due to their high levels of social contacts. If family life is the heart of Italian culture, and we have 20+ or 30+ family members, friends and neighbors crowded around a table on Sundays, then, sadly enough, we are witnesses to a tragedy unfolding.

From another source: Transmission from asymptomatic cases is likely not a major driver of transmission. Persons who are symptomatic will spread the virus more readily through coughing and sneezing. Why are they so sure? What happens if children and younger people carry the virus, without showing any symptoms, and have close contact with the vulnerable elderly whose immune system is weaker?

From today's Washington Post (March 17):

The Washington Post has tracked every known U.S. death and has analyzed data provided by state and local health officials, families of the victims and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Of the first 100 reported fatalities, many people appear to have had underlying health conditions, making it harder for their bodies to fight off covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Some had diabetes, kidney failure, hypertension or pulmonary ailments.
Nearly all — about 85 percent — were older than 60, and about 45 percent were older than 80. It’s unclear how some of them contracted the disease, but more than a third were living in residential care facilities when they became ill.
What is known about the scale of transmission and the high number of deaths among vulnerable populations — like at the Life Care Center of Kirkland in Washington state, where 27 of the facility’s 120 residents have died — has experts deeply concerned.
“I see that as the ‘canary in a coal mine’ situation,” said Fred Buckner, an attending physician at the University of Washington Medical Center. “I suspect it’s going to be taking off in other locations just like it is in the Seattle area. There’s no reason not to think that. Obviously, that means more deaths.”
Darlene Kimball, 72, was one of those who died of covid-19 after a stay at Life Care Center. The avid gardener, animal lover and grandmother of five had been living with ovarian cancer for four years when she fell in mid-February and went to Life Care Center for rehabilitation, said her daughter, Tami Kahler.
Kimball at that point was lucid, talkative and mobile. She was in the process of finding a new oncologist.
But at Life Care Center, she developed a cough, becoming increasingly raspy and finding it difficult to breathe. While visiting Kimball — who was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and friends “24 hours a day,” Kahler said in an interview — family members noticed that much of the facility’s residents appeared to be sick. When Kimball began complaining of chest pains in late February, they urged a nurse to call the hospital.
It was only after the doctors and nurses had started wearing masks and gowns in Kimball’s presence; after her pneumonia was diagnosed and she was transferred to hospice care; and after the family pleaded for a coronavirus test that Kahler said her mother got one.
“They got the results back on Thursday,” March 5, Kahler said. “She died Friday.”

Why would we attend Russian-Orthodox church services or listen to their chants? Due to high rates of intermarriage with Eastern Europeans, many of us are the results of the cultural hybridization process that goes along with it - cultural elements associated with Russia or other Eastern European cultures blend perfectly into another culture.

Theologically, the Church of Scotland and the Russian-Orthodox Church are from completely opposite ends of the Christian spectrum. Rev. Ian Paisley might have blown 'em up ;) They were an integral part of the Czarist regime. However, many intellectuals in Revolutionary Russia condemned the destruction of Russian-Orthodox churches and monasteries. The Church, its traditions, architecture, iconography, liturgy and chants were regarded as precious works of Russian art.

Why would president Putin attend church services? He does, frequently, maybe regularly. In search of Old Russia and Russian identity, one may guess.

Library Spotlight: The Scottish Collection

  • The Art of Coorie by Gabriella Bennett

Coorie - or còsagach in Gaelic - is the Scottish version of hygge. In The Art Of Coorie, Gabriella Bennett explores what coorie is and how it has nurtured Scotland's famous creativity, despite an often harsh and unforgiving climate. The Art of Coorie explores lifestyle, homes and interiors, traditions and how to enjoy life through challenges. It looks at how to appreciate what we have and how to use the best of all things Scottish to enhance life and its pleasures.

Coronavirus stories

'n Woonvertrek in 'n Romeinse meerverdieping-woonstelgebou in Ostia se middestad • A Roman apartment in a multistory apartment block in Ostia (thank God they have restored the stairs leading to the first floor). Some of the apartments had balconies overlooking the street or courtyard. To prevent the risks of fire, there were no kitchens inside the building. Tenants would simply walk down the stairs and have dinner in the thermopolium across the street - a small restaurant with a lovely courtyard garden. The archaeological park is still closed, but we have scores of photographs taken in January to enjoy a virtual visit Wikipedia-wise

Los Angeles Times, June 1, 2020: Climbing out from coronavirus: Northern California county sags under weight of economic crash

Key points
  • But people here are torn — restaurateurs, campground owners, hotel managers, gym operators, tattoo artists and wedding photographers. They know that if California opens up, the virus will come to their communities. If it doesn’t, financial ruin will.
  • He feels that until counties like Modoc, Yuba and Sutter began to defy state orders in the last few weeks, state leaders were ignoring the more rural areas where work could not simply shift online.
  • “The asks are different for different people,” Thiem said. “I feel like the policymakers are Bay Area-centric, where they say, ‘Just go work from home.’ You know most of our economy here cannot be done from home. So to say, ‘Go work from home because you’re safer’ is different than to say, ‘You need to shut down and bankrupt your business.’”

Libreria Santi Quaranta in Treviso: Book of the Month

Porta Santi Quaranta (the libreria's name refers to this city gate. For a nice passegiata: from the city center, walk towards the Ponte San Martino, turn right and walk along the Sile river. You will pass through this gate on your way back to the centro storico. Part of this passegiata is next to a busy street - you are without the historic city wall, and that's where they keep all the busy traffic areas...

One of my entries in March:

I am sad to confirm that author and editor Ferruccio Mazzariol's bookshop Libreria Santi Quaranta has closed its doors forever on December 31, 2019. Looking back: Cerimonia 30° Editrice Santi Quaranta - Luca Zaia, president of Veneto, on Facebook: Auguri grande…

For me, this would have been one of the first stores to visit... It's gone, but it looks like there is an online version of this little shop of treasures. I remember the first time I walked into this libreria. Signore Mazzariol proudly presented one of the books about Treviso and the Marca he has written: La mia Treviso. Passeggiate nella Marca.

I recommend it as our book of the month. La mia Treviso. A rewarding book for those who have mastered Italian. I would also label it as a local interest book not likely to be translated into English, but it is joyful reading for those who are familiar with Treviso and its surroundings and who enjoy their passeggiate in the centro storico as much as I do.

The quiet and elegant atmosphere, the whitewashed buildings... The setting for Santi Quaranta.

Road legends of America

Did you know there is a place where the historic U.S. Route 66 crosses itself?

It's Albuquerque, New Mexico. Learn why.

American Cooking Basics

Conehead cabbage, pointed cabbage, spitskool, Spitzkohl... I'm browsing through the recipes right now...

America is a land of extremes.

  • Yes, there is heavily processed convenience food in stores plus fast food (and there are times when you can't resist it...got my air fryer ready): Visual Capitalist: Ranked: Biggest Fast Food Chains in America
  • And there are 50+ excellent, heavenly regional cuisines, one for every state. Stumbled upon this website: The Spruce Eats: American Food & Recipes
  • What's in season for Northern Hemisphere dwellers? Cabbage, according to Farm Flavor. Now I am mad about spitskool (the Afrikaans equivalent of conehead cabbage, also known as pointed cabbage). It's delicious when sautéed, stir-fried, steamed, peppered, salted, whatever... Add white wine, prosecco, cider (as a drink - don't spoil the cabbage!) ... A shame it is less popular with producers and processing plants owing to its odd shape.

Opulence in the Gilded Age

The Gilded Age (from 1870 to 1900) was a time when America's wealthiest families not only had opulent mansions built for themselves. Through intermarriage, they also got connected to Britain's noble families (who were in desperate need of cash - of which the Americans had plenty to spare. Enough to have old British plumbing pipes replaced... Imagine a modern American lady entering an old British country house... and his lordship - her husband - receiving hits with an old pipe...).

Downton Abbey aficionados know the whole story - Cora Crawley (née Levinson), Countess of Grantham, Viscountess Downton is an American heiress. From a book review: Fellowes (Julian Fellowes, the creator and script writer) succeeds in not only entertaining his audience with a combination of sustained storylines and sharp one-liners but also in delivering a social commentary of British life.

We must admire him - the whole series is based on historical facts. I went on a guided tour of Pollok House, a National Trust property in Glasgow (part of which still belongs to a noble family), with a group of British ladies - it was sheer fun! We could answer questions like "Why would Carson, the butler, iron the newspapers?" To avoid ink bleeds and smears. More later.

Gilded Age American Heiresses Take on the Peerage
In 1895 nine American girls, including a Vanderbilt (railroads), LaRoche (pharmaceuticals), Rogers (oil), and Whitney (New York trolleys), married peers of the British realm--among them, a duke, an earl, three barons, and a knight.
It was the peak year of a social phenomenon that began in the Gilded Age after the Civil War, and handed down the legacy of Anglomania, preppies, and the world of two television series, Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age.
In all, more than 100 American heiresses invaded Britannia and swapped dollars for titles. Filled with a wealth of historical personalities, grand houses, gossipy anecdotes, and a feature called comme il faut--the very finest points of etiquette that ruled Victorian and Edwardian society--To Marry an English Lord is their story. Carolinas & Georgia Mini Wikimania Online Fun

Remember how (self-declared) progressive and liberal journos made fun of President Carter's brown cardigan (the one he wore when delivering his fireside chats from the White House west wing study?) Not quite Karl Lagerfeld style. But Karl would have been among the first sensible listeners and watchers to call him what he was and is - one of the few sincere presidents the US ever had.

Did you know Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter reside in the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and Preservation District? But don't expect local business people in Plains to show you "where the peanut trees are". Out of good old-fashioned Southern politeness, they will simply tell you "I don't know."

Another hilarious statement to be found in the Moon handbook about Georgia: Atlanta will be sort of a disappointment for tourists who come there to get a glimpse of Scarlett O'Hara's Deep South. Humidity and temperatures in the summer months aside, it has as much a Southern flavor as, say, Toronto. Ouch. It may also best be described as a huge lab where they test the maximum number of Northerners to be absorbed by a Southern metropolis. Ouch, that hurts.

First Nations in the Carolinas

Did you know the Cherokee people of the Carolinas welcomed European settlers and willingly adapted to a new lifestyle, developing their own alphabet and publishing a newspaper? Although Europeans certainly brought a host of deadly diseases to the New World. Sadly enough, they were forcibly removed from their land. Many younger children and elderly people did not survive the so-called Trail of Tears to Oklahoma - a deportation president Andrew Jackson insisted upon. A few Cherokee escaped deportation; their descendants are proud Tar Heels (North Carolina Citizens).

It may be a somewhat different story as cultural differences were not as great as in the Americas (and there was no exposure to new diseases), but archaeological evidence in Europe points to a peaceful co-existence of Germanic and Slavic communities in the period of westward migration of Slavs. They certainly brought advanced agricultural knowledge and new foodstuffs with them - and were thus highly welcome to join Germanic communities in a time when people struggled for bare survival.

Tune of the Day

Denon link cable discontinued - hope the reviews have been archived

When Denon started selling their $400 or $500 Denon HD link cable quite a few years ago (which resembled plain dead and simple network cables for the unwashed, unhirezed and uninformed general public), they got the funniest Amazon reviews from US customers ever - like warp holes opening behind their couch after installation. Cannot find them, will do a research. Cannot find the warp hole either, while my receiver cannot find blu-ray player no. 3 connected to it with said cable. They're all smart things. If there's more than one in the system, they behave like academics - and start arguing who's right. Panasonic UHD player has decided to kick out the Denon, while Panasonic UHD recorder plus hard disc behaves like a cat who will just ignore all inferior lifeforms. All signals will have to be reassigned to the inputs. Otherwise, sound quality has improved beyond belief within the same price range. Unfortunately, the Afrikaans terminology is hard to find. The hi-fi and hi-rez world is dominated by English-language forums.

Somehow we must cover topics like sound recording and reproduction (analog to digital to analog). Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now in hi-rez sends shivers down your spine.

Now, we know sometimes you hear musicians breathing - and, as someone in the business keeps gossiping, there's one famous US musician who suffers from such terrible flatulences (we mean persistent and severe gas) that - reportedly - he's run into difficulties when trying to hire (informed) session musicians. Now we wonder if - soundwise - these symptoms might also be revealed in a hi-rez setting? Recording showcases please, guys. And - no, don't mention it, or said musician may fall victim to an accidental overdose of antiflatulants...

Covid-19 and the Grand Reopening: Rates in SC keep hitting new highs

Are frat parties to blame? There are reports of an increase in cases in young people (18 to 24 year olds), some of them quite severe.

Citing from The State newspaper's online edition (June 21):

State health officials are projecting 4,354 new cases for the upcoming week and have been urging members of the public to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines to protect their health and others.
Linda Bell, state epidemiologist for the Department of Health and Environmental Control, said recently that “every day that we don’t all do our part, we are extending the duration” of the COVID-19 virus.
“Every one of us has a role to play in stopping COVID-19. This virus does not spread on its own. It’s spread around our state by infected people who carry it wherever they go — their work, the supermarket, the post office, a friend’s house. By not following public health precautions, many are putting all at risk,” Bell said.
PGA Tour player Justin Thomas, competing in the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing at Harbour Town Golf Links, suggested Saturday the visitors’ relaxed attitudes around Sea Pines could be to blame for fellow tour player Nick Watney testing positive for the virus Friday.
“I mean, no offense to Hilton Head, but they’re seeming to not take it very seriously,” Thomas said. “It’s an absolute zoo around here. There’s people everywhere. The beaches are absolutely packed. Every restaurant, from what I’ve seen when I’ve been driving by, is absolutely crowded. ... Unfortunately, that’s not on Nick because I know he’s very cautious and has done everything he can, but I would say a lot of people in this area of Hilton Head just aren’t.

They keep referring to the Golden State as Coronafornia in the Los Angeles Times' comment sections, with cases surging in the Los Angeles area, among other places. There is no evidence that the Black Lives Matter protests sparked new Covid-19 outbreaks, although many readers cannot resist blaming protesters. Some employers are splitting workforces in two - if one group contracts the virus, they may still rely on the other one (hopefully).

Rumors spread about Church of Scientology, Covid-19 and ozone treatment

Time to replace your laser printer filter!

Ozone treatment and sanitizers: Ozone blast has been in use for many years. Know what a pool is? I regularly use ozone and hot steam to clean apartments and offices, boats and pools, duck palaces and anything touched by non-Scientologists (LOL), so do our Moscow and Treviso neighbors, and obviously all CoS orgs and missions - but I do not recommend it as a treatment for Covid-19 patients.

We're getting the right comments there. Yes indeed, laser printers emit ozone and ultrafine toner particles. That's why we insist on ventilation systems, open windows and air purifiers when printers are in constant use. You may also ask dealers for dedicated laser printer filters.

However, air pollution in most cities may do more harm than your printer. The "open window" option may be the right one for those of us printing in health resorts (LOL).

President Trump orders police reforms

President Trump has issued an executive order instituting nationwide police reforms to keep communities safe and ensure equal justice and treatment for all Americans.
The Executive Order on Safe Policing for Safe Communities mandates that police departments will receive accredited training on de-escalation, use of force and community engagement. Additionally, a database will track police officers within the U.S. who have received complaints of excessive force. It also calls for increased training and resources, including increased partnerships with social workers when responding to individuals suffering from mental health issues, homelessness or addiction.
Raising standards of policing and reducing crime are not mutually exclusive, Trump said at a June 16 signing ceremony.
“Americans believe we must support the brave men and women in blue who police our streets and keep us safe,” the president said. “Americans also believe we must improve accountability, increase transparency, and invest more resources in police training, recruiting and community engagement.”
The order also effectively bans officers from restraining suspects by the neck, except in situations where deadly force is allowed by law.
Trump’s action responds to the killing of George Floyd on May 25 while in the custody of Minneapolis police, and it adds to efforts also underway by state and local officials. Local reforms include increasing disclosure of police misconduct and body camera footage.

De'Longhi Multifryer. Come on, Voyageur...
De'Longhi is a family business based in Treviso (although the multi-fryers are made in China - only premium products are still manufactured in Italy)
World War II had a lasting effect on US food manufacturing and consumption. Helping to feed the soldiers meant finding the right combination of product and packaging that would travel and be preserved. Those developments would later benefit consumers. Mass production of Florida orange juice began during World War II, but the quality of the beverage was questioned. The US Agriculture Department tested numerous oranges and grapefruits for their nutritional content. Nickerson reported on the findings that most of the vitamin C found in oranges and grapefruits was found in the rinds.
Several new products came about because of the war, including caramel milk. The thought was that sweetness in the cans of milk would encourage soldiers on the battlefield to drink the dairy product.

  • Kimberly Wilmot Voss: The Food Section. Newspaper Women and the Culinary Community. Lanham • Boulder • New York • London: Rowman & Littlefield 2014
  • What about healthy food and cooking? Slow cookers like the famous Crock Pot became popular in the US and were later adopted by UK consumers. The basement floor of one Glasgow department store was full of slow cookers when I last visited them, with several brands on display.
  • I purchased the Krups Cook4Me (meant for "assisted cooking" - still in its original packaging, see a review: slowcooker.de - Krups Cook4Me) which is just perfect for browning meat, pressure cooking, steaming (although I would use a more sophisticated device for that). The only missing feature is - slow cooking. It comes with preset menus and lets you even choose the number of servings you need. Or you may set your own program (you choose the food and its weight - the device does the rest. As to the review - steaks would best be fried for only a few minutes at a very high temperature, then wrapped in foil and put in the oven. Cooking meat, vegetables and potatoes in just one device would not make any sense - unless you prepare a stew or any similar dish. What you want to do is shorten the cooking time for potatoes, cauliflower and other vegetables. Noodles may also be pressure-cooked in the Krups - a nice (German-speaking) Serbian lady on Youtube.com, called Jana or Frau Prepinović - has uploaded lots of videos to youtube.com: Cooking noodles in the Krups Cook4Me
  • Also waiting for its première: The DeLonghi Multi-fryer Extra Chef. Baking pizzas or lovely Italian cakes or maybe french fries? Although, I guess the stirring element is tricky, and cleaning the device not that easy, as one Austrian consumer reports. The recipe book app (available for iPads and Android devices, got it on both) is mouth-watering... If well-known Italian chefs pose with it, it should somehow work just fine...
  • Some good reviews may help create encyclopedic articles which are useful for consumers. Fads for foodies...

Poetic language, somewhat grainy but fascinating photography and never-ending optimism - a world of its own. Northern Ireland before the Troubles, Argentina under dictatorship - it is a magical recreation of places, a world of elegance, beauty, promises. I stumbled upon articles about Vermont, Rhode Island and Chesapeake Bay, North Carolina and life in the Appalachian Mountains. Addictive.

How to whip up a quick but epic 4th July dinner?

Be home for dinner...
Drink list approved...!
  • Oven baked Cajun chicken breast is my favorite. I have run out of Cajun seasoning and will rely on Amazon for restocking my pantry. Best side dishes? Wedges or french fries? Corn fritters? Fried sweet corn? Salad?
  • Drinks: English or Irish beer, cider, Italian sparkling water, Venetian Aperol Spritz, Italian Martini cocktails, espresso, caffè latte. Just to mention a few.
  • Traditional berry dessert: Ice cream or a cheese cake with berries?
  • Italian ricotta cake with grapefruits or mandarin oranges on Sunday?
  • A Po' boy on Sunday?
  • Entertainment? Mom an' I just figgered out how to crank the ol' Victrola that was hidden in the hay barn-style* or worse ;) ?
  • One user's classic and epic reply to an Audio Asylum forum post by some wealthy audiophile with $$$, suggesting the purchase of ridiculously expensive equipment.

Heartbreaking news from Ireland

Donkeys Have Their Day
The United Kingdom has balked at bailing out Greece, but some British citizens spare no expense when it comes to saving one class of down-trodden Greeks: Donkeys. Some of the animals are even lucky enough to live at the 'Donkey Palace.' (More: Hee Haw! Donkeys Get Last Laugh As One Greek Tragedy Ends Happily)
* Many older donkeys, who cannot carry back-breaking loads any more, are abandoned by their owners.
* The Greek government has officially banned overweight tourists from riding donkeys, but some owners simply do not obey this ban.

New online discussion: Zombies' culture

  • Zombies' culture is dead culture. It does not create jobs, wealth or an understanding of history, architecture, whatever.
  • Zombies' culture is heavily subsidized by the state or any other public entity - it's a burden for the taxpayer.
  • Zombies' culture is out of touch with everyone and everything. It is not even appreciated by the commercial bourgeoisie.

Let us now praise famous men... (See Walker Evans biography for details).

  • The Getty Foundation, Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey, even a Southern Gothic novel like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil have developed into multidimensional cultural phenomena.
  • The United States have become a cultural superpower, 50 or 51 times magnified (counting every single state as a cultural community in its own right), and yet there is potential for so much more...
  • Living culture is accessible to everyone. Period.

Let us now celebrate famous women...

Fourth of July Books - and Weird Facts

  • The French in North America - to be delivered on Friday or Saturday. One Amazon store has gone out of stock... LOL!
  • In Metropolitan France, settlements in North American were seen as penal colonies - nothing to get excited about...
  • In New Orleans, there are only one or two French colonial buildings still standing...
  • Much of the French culture associated with the city is indeed a construct... So what. Who cares.

ROTFL

TWIN PEAKS BASE (Near Lake Arrowhead, California)
Sorry folks, closed society!
Nestled deep in the San Bernadino Mountains east of LA, Scientology's secretive Church of Spiritual Technology HQ is as [sic] good place to hide out should the coronavirus topple civilization.
Built to withstand a nuclear holocaust to the exact specifications handed down by David Miscavige, the hideout is supposedly home to special bunkers where Tom Cruise and John Travolta can escape to should things get really bad.
The base – where construction began 1989 with a budget of at least $18 million – is so secure that many researchers believe it is where Miscavige's wife Shelley has been living since she was reportedly exiled by her husband in 2005.

ROTFL No. 2

NEW MEXICO
Scientologists have been preparing for Armageddon for some time – but it seems they were expecting it to be a nuclear rather than bacteriological cataclysm.
During the 1980s, its Church of Spiritual Technology branch spent millions of dollars to build Trementina Base in a remote part of the New Mexico desert.
The compound's main building has been described as an 'alien space cathedral', which sits on the side of a mountain.
Nearby it has secret tunnels carved hundreds of feet deep into the rock and underground vaults holding the written works of L. Ron Hubbard.
Two massive giant circles carved into the ground with diamond shapes inside are believed to be landing markers for future generations of Scientologists returning from space after a nuclear catastrophe wipes out the human race.

ROTFL No. 3

Bases in Idaho and North Carolina not detected by yellow press as yet... May contain Tom Cruises's, John Travolta's and Voyageur's secret storage facilities for russet potatoes and select wines, should potato and wine producers fall victim to Covid-19.

UK Guidance

UK Economic Outlook

Do you have the bunting out and the fireworks primed for Independence Day, with 4 July designated as the moment England ends its long national hibernation and flocks to the pub?
The date may yet acquire new notoriety if the grand English reopening comes to seem premature, given that coronavirus is still lethally active and the UK has one of the world’s highest death rates. And yet 4 July does not mark this week’s most reckless date. With much less fanfare, another milestone was passed, one that could wreak a havoc all its own – especially in combination with the pandemic.
I’m speaking of 11pm on 30 June, the moment at which Britain lost the ability to seek an extension of the Brexit transition period. Unless we reach a new free trade agreement with the European Union in the next six months, we will be crashing out of the EU with no deal on 31 December.
Cummings may like the politics of crashing out under cover of corona, but anyone else can surely see that now is absolutely not the time to submit Britain to the economic shock of a chaotic break from our nearest trading partners. Recall that the Bank of England has warned that the UK faces its deepest recession since the Great Frost of 1709; that the OECD forecasts that the UK will suffer the worst recession in the developed world; that three quarters of UK manufacturers expect to cut jobs this year.
 - The Guardian, 3 July 2020

The Great Frost of 1709? Oops.

Pre-Fourth of July Horrors

I have a knack for wreaking havoc wherever I tread... I knocked one of my 4K monitors off the desk while preparing separate desktops for Windows 10 and macOS. It nearly hit the hardwood floor. Hope it is not broken. There is no visible damage at least. Expect the worst when I suddenly go offline.

Temps will top out in the low 90s in Louisiana and North Carolina, while the heat will also ramp up in the west and southwest. No fireworks in some places, and there will be limited online activity. Time to wash and dry the face masks.

Italian and Italian American Studies

Here's to our lovely hosts...

  • Our Part I: Making Italian America: Consumer Culture and the Production of Ethnic Identities (Critical Studies in Italian America) - Already a favorite. Library

New additions have come into the library - Mathieu Dupuis' breathtaking fine art photos will take us right into the historic heartlands of Francophone America, the Province de Québec. Anyone keen to edit this one - please refer to: Gouvernement du Canada - Ministère de la Justice: Provinces et Territoires. It's definitely not the Province du Québec. Vermont and the The Four Seasons in American Culture were also part of this shipment.

The Four Seasons (University of North Carolina Press)

  • The deseasonalization of American cities and the society as a whole
  • From snowplows to snowbirds
  • How many seasons are there in American states? Possibly only three in California.
  • American slaves and the climate of states north of the Sun Belt, how they described seasons (" a cold season of vapor and rain"; most of them would not know their exact birthdate - "during harvesting season")
  • The four seasons of a human life - childhood, youth, middle age, old age
  • The commercialization of seasons (Christmas in the Sun Belt - artificial snow; culture of four seasons/all seasons)

The 1910's (American Popular Culture through History)

  • This debut volume in Greenwood's exciting new American Popular Culture Through History series presents a narrative-based tour through the pivotal decade of the 1910s in America.|The decade of the 1910s saw the United States rise above strictly European cultural influences as the mixing of race, ethnicity, class, and gender yielded colorful fusions within American society. Historian David Blanke delves into the cornucopia of activities, trends, and events that shaped and enriched the day-to-day lives of Americans in this decade. Twelve scrupulously researched chapters bring to life all of the important aspects of popular culture in 1910s America: from Birth of a Nation to the Black Sox scandal, the Teddy Bear to Tarzan, breakfast cereal to the first brassiere. (Publisher's text)
  • The Society of Architectural Historians' Buildings of Louisiana
  • 20+ Moon Handbook titles, including Utah, Charleston & Savannah, Minnesota, Coastal Carolinas, South Carolina, Atlanta, Georgia. Chesapeake Bay, Nova Scotia and many more will be shipped next week.

Community matters

At first I wondered why the Explorer's Guide to Vermont would be shipped to Europe - it looked like a guide for automobile travel. That's what it's meant for. And yet it is packed with useful background information. Now we are at the level of local historical societies. Keep up the good work!

Do French people care about Cajun culture and music?

They do. Cajun music festival in France: Bayou Chicot - Festival des Nuits Cajun et Zydeco de Saulieu 2010

Rome

Trastevere and Prati were among the places we explored during the Roman Mini Wikimania in December 2019/January 2020. First-time visitors: If you're traveling with children and prefer a comfortable but inexpensive hotel in the city center, the hotel San Pietrino in Prati is one of our top recommendations. This 19th century palazzo (the hotel is on the 3rd floor) is only a five-minute walk to St. Peter's Square.

Via Cola di Rienzo (fashion - Fashion - FASHION!) is nearby. You will also love the Bialetti Home Store on Piazza Cola di Rienzo.
