Universiteit van Michigan
Die Universiteit van Michigan (Engels: University of Michigan) is 'n openbare navorsingsuniversiteit in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in die Verenigde State. Die universiteit het ongeveer 32 000 voorgraadse en ongeveer 18 000 nagraadse studente.
Geskiedenis
[wysig | wysig bron]Die geskiedenis van die Universiteit van Michigan spoor sy oorsprong terug na 1703 tydens die koloniale tydperk van Nieu-Frankryk,[1][2] gewortel in vroeë Katolieke voorstelle vir seminare en gemeenskapskole deur Sainte-Anne-de-Détroit.[3][4][5] Hierdie opvoedkundige inisiatiewe het ontwikkel deur Franse, Britse en Amerikaanse bewind totdat die territoriale regering amptelik die Catholepistemiad (of Universiteit van Michigania) in 1817 gestig het, onder die grondleggende leierskap van die Katolieke priester Vader Gabriel Richard.[6][7][8][9][10][7][11][12]
Na Michigan se staatwording en die universiteit se daaropvolgende verskuiwing na Ann Arbor in 1837,[13] het die instelling in 1851 wetgewende onafhanklikheid verkry. Dit het gefloreer onder die leiding van transformerende presidente soos Henry Philip Tappan en James Burrill Angell,[14][15] wat dit tot die status van 'n elite, internasionaal erkende universiteit verhef het.[15] Deur die twintigste eeu en in die hedendaagse era het die instelling sy kampusinfrastruktuur en akademiese aanbiedinge onder opeenvolgende administrasies uitgebrei, en deurlopend ontwikkel deur na-oorlogse institusionele groei.
