English: In the past, the Khlong Khone Mangrove Forest in Thailand was quite fertile and biologically diverse, replete with a large number aquatic creature species, shrimps, shells, and fishes, for example, due to its unspoiled ecosystem. People living along the canal were able to earn their living. However, changing seawater conditions, deforestation, and clearance of forests for shrimp farming have caused fewer and fewer numbers of forests and the deterioration of the ecosystem. Since a reforestation project was introduced into the area, locals and concerned agencies have paid more attention to mangrove forest conservation. Today, the forests have gradually recovered to its former condition. Khlong Khone Mangrove Conservation Center of Samut Songkhram, under the wetland management project at Bang Taboon river delta, carries out works associated with conservation and restoration of mangrove forests by organizing, in collaboration with local villagers, reforestation-related activities, and serves as a centre for learning and publicising mangrove afforestation and reforestation, as well as the way of life of the ‘Sea Gypsies’.
