Mark Zachary Jacobson (gebore 1965) is 'n Amerikaanse hoogleraar in siviele en omgewingsingenieurswese aan die Stanford Universiteit (VSA) en direkteur van die Atmosphere and Energy Program aan die universiteit.

Jacobson studeer siviele ingenieurswese en ekonomie aan die Stanford Universiteit, en behaal sy baccalaureus diploma in 1988. Na die verwerwing van sy meestersgraad in die omgewingsingenieurswese, neem hy sy studies verder aan die Universiteit van Kalifornië, waar hy in 1991 'n meestersgraad in atmosferiese wetenskap en in 1994 sy doktorsgraad behaal. Daarna het hy teruggekeer na Stanford Universiteit. Van 1994 tot 2001 werk hy daar as Assistent Professor burgerlike en omgewingstegniek en van 2001 tot 2007 as Universiteit Hoofdosent. Sedert 2007 beklee hy die leerstoel van hierdie afdeling.

Jacobson ontwikkel rekenaarmodelle oor die impak van die verskillende energie tegnolgieë en hul uitlaat in verband met lugbesoedeling en klimaatverandering. Hy is die outeur van boeke en tientalle artikels wat baie aangehaal word en waarvoor hy pryse ontvang van die American Meteorological Society en die American Geophysical Union[1]

Volgens Jacobson is 'n vinnige oorgang na skoon hernubare energie nodig om die moontlike versnelling van aardverwarming, met gevolge soos die verdwyning van die Noordpoolys, te verminder. Hierdie oorgang metode sal per jaar wêreldwyd ook 2,5 tot 3 miljoen sterfgevalle elimineer wat verband hou met lugbesoedeling en die verbranding van fossielbrandstof.

Jacobson stel dat energie ontwikkeling uit bronne soos wind, water en sonkrag koste-effektief opgeskaal kan word om te voldoen aan ons energiebehoefte en om die menslike samelewing te bevry van die afhanklikheid van beide fossielebrandstowwe sowel as kernenergie. In 2009 het Jacobson en Mark A. Delucchi 'n plan in Scientific American gepubliseer om die hele planeet te voorsien van skoon, volhoubare energie.[2] Die artikel is gerig op 'n aantal sake, soos die wêreldwye benodigte ruimte vir windparke, die beskikbaarheid van skaars materiale vir die vervaardiging van nuwe stelsels, die vermoë om betroubare energie te lewer op aanvraag, en die gemiddelde koste per kilowattuur.
