Hier is kommunikasie wat ek van Prof Peter Ryan gekry het:
Dear Deon I was forwarded your query re Stonechat scientific names. Saxicola torquatus was the type specimen of Stonechat, collected in the Cape and sent to Sweden where Linnaeaus described it. When the species was later split into African and European species, the Europeans tried to hijack torquatus for their species, but they lost out, so torquatus is the African Stonechat and rubicola was the name given to the European species. Quite why SASOL Afrikaans has rubicola I don't know - the English version has torquatus which is correct for the African Bontrokkie. P
