Die Jackson-Gwilt-medalje is 'n toekenning wat sedert 1897 deur die Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) uitgereik is. Die oorspronklike kriteria was vir die uitvinding, verbetering of ontwikkeling van astronomiese instrumentasie of tegnieke; vir prestasie in observasionele sterrekunde; of vir prestasie in navorsing in die geskiedenis van sterrekunde. Vanaf 2017 is die geskiedenis van die sterrekunde -kategorie verwyder en oorgedra na 'n nuwe toekenning, die Agnes Mary Clerke-medalje. [1]

Die frekwensie van die medalje het oor tyd verander. Aanvanklik was dit onreëlmatig, met gapings van tussen drie en vyf jaar tussen toekennings. Vanaf 1968 is dit elke drie jaar gereeld toegeken; vanaf 2004 elke twee jaar; en sedert 2008 is dit elke jaar toegeken. Die toekenning is vernoem na Hannah Jackson (gebore Gwilt). Sy was 'n niggie van Joseph Gwilt ('n argitek en genoot van die Royal Astronomical Society) en dogter van George Gwilt ('n ander genoot); Hannah het die oorspronklike fondse vir die medalje geskenk.[2] Dit is die tweede oudste toekenning wat deur die RAS uitgereik is, na die Goue Medalje.
