TRAPPIST-1, ook bekend as 2MASS J23062928-0502285,[1] is ’n baie koel dwergster[2][3][4] sowat 39 ligjare van die Aarde af in die sterrebeeld Waterdraer.

’n Span sterrekundiges onder leiding van Michaël Gillon van die Institut d’Astrophysique et Géophysique aan die Universiteit van Luik[5] in België het die TRAPPIST (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope)-teleskoop by die La Silla-sterrewag in Chili[6] gebruik om die ster waar te neem en na eksoplanete te soek. Deur verbygang-fotometrie het hulle aanvanklik drie aardgrootte-planete ontdek wat om die ster wentel; die binneste twee is in ’n sinchroniese omwenteling met hul moederster terwyl die buitenste een blykbaar in die ster se bewoonbare sone of net daarbuite lê.[3][7] Die span het hul waarnemings van September tot Desember 2015 bekendgemaak en hul bevindings in die Mei 2016-uitgawe van die tydskrif Nature gepubliseer.[6][8]
