PZ Cassiopeiae (afgekort as PZ Cas) is ’n rooisuperreus en halfgereelde veranderlike ster in die sterrebeeld Kassiopeia. Dit is een van die grootste en helderste bekende sterre.

Eienskappe[wysig | wysig bron]

PZ Cassiopeiae is ’n helder rooisuperreus en, met sy radius van meer as 1 000 keer dié van die Son en ligsterkte van meer as 200 000 die Son s’n, een van die grootste en helderste sterre in sy soort. Dit is waarskynlik lid van die Cas OB5-sterassosiasie, maar blykbaar baie jonger as die ander sterre in die assosiasie.[8] Die ster verloor sowat 2,6×10−5 M☉ (sonmassas) per jaar en is ook al beskryf as ’n rooihiperreus.[12][13]

Sy afstand van die Son af is aanvanklik bereken op sowat 7 800 ligjare, maar daaropvolgende studies het dit verfyn tot 9 160 ligjare en ’n parallaks van 0,356±0,026 mas. Dit beteken sy ligsterkte is sowat 229 000 dié van die Son en sy aanvanklike massa 20 tot 25 sonmassas. Dié parameters is almal soortgelyk aan dié van die rooihiperreus VY Canis Majoris.[8][7]

PZ Cas is ’n stadige, halfgereelde veranderlike ster met ’n pulseringstydperk van 925 dae in die General Catalogue of Variable Stars,[14] hoewel sommige bronne ook tydperke van 850 en 3 195 dae aangee.[9][4] Die visuele omvang van PZ Cas is ’n magnitude van sowat 8-10, wat groot is vir dié soort veranderlike ster.[4]
