Populisme, word gedefinieer as óf 'n ideologie,[1][2][3][4] 'n politieke filosofie[5][6][7] of 'n blote besprekingsvorm,[8][9] en is 'n soort polities-sosiale gedagtegang wat "die mense" opstel teenoor "die elite", wat sodoende sosiale en politieke stelseloorgange voorstaan, en/of ontplooiing van 'n retoriese styl deur lede van politieke of sosiale bewegings. Dit word deur die Cambridge woordeboek omskryf as "politieke idees en aktiwiteite wat ten doel het om gewone mense se behoeftes en wense te vervul".[10]
