Ian Murray McKellen (gebore 25 Mei 1939) is 'n Engelse akteur en skrywer. McKellen se liefde vir die teater is op 'n vroeë ouderdom gestimuleer deur sy ouers, wat hom op die ouderdom van drie na 'n opvoering van Peter Pan by The Manchester Opera House geneem het.
Hy het sy eerste rolle vertolk by sy laerskool, Bolton-School in die dorp Wigan, waarheen hy en sy ouers verhuis het net voor die uitbreek van die Tweede Wêreldoorlog. By Bolton-School het hy in die toneelstuk The Beauty Contest deur Leonard Roe gespeel, en Malvolio in Twelfth Night gespeel.
Nadat hy sy hoërskoolloopbaan voltooi het, is 'n beurs aan hom toegeken om Engelse letterkunde te studeer onder leiding van Tom Henn, 'n vooraanstaande geleerde van Shakespeare en Yeats.
Na twee jaar is McKellen se beurs egter teruggetrek, aangesien sy akademiese vordering oorskadu is deur die toenemende aantal teaterproduksies waaraan hy deelgeneem het. Nadat hy in 1961 met 'n Baccalaureus Artium gegradueer het, het hy besluit om 'n akteur te word, en sonder om deur kunsskool te gaan, het hy sy amptelike debuut as Roper in A Man of All Seasons by die Belgrade-teater gemaak.
Drie jaar later het hy saam met sy vriend Brian Taylor, 'n geskiedenisonderwyser, in Londen gewoon. McKellen het nie sy homoseksualiteit by die werk of in sy persoonlike omgewing weggesteek nie, maar wel vir sy onmiddellike familie en die media, want hy het gesê dat homoseksualiteit toe nogal 'n sensitiewe saak in Engeland was.
Hy het 'n ruk lank gas gespeel in die Britse reeks Coronation Street. Op 29 Augustus 2012 het hy 'n rol gespeel in die openingseremonie van die Paralimpiese Spele.
