Emerson "Emmo" Fittipaldi (pt-br; (gebore 12 Desember 1946 in São Paulo) is 'n voormalige Brasiliaanse renjaer. Hy het twee keer Formule 1-wêreldbestuurderskampioen en een keer IndyCar-kampioen geword.

Loopbaan

Emerson Fittipaldi het sy motorsportloopbaan in Engeland in die Britse Formule Ford begin. (Ná hom sou baie meer Brasiliane dieselfde roete volg: Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna, Rubens Barrichello en Felipe Massa). ’n Jaar later, in 1970, het hy sy Formule 1-debuut by die Britse Grand Prix gemaak as Lotus se derde jaer. Nadat die leier Jochen Rindt tydens oefening in Monza gesterf het, het hy op sensasionele wyse die rol van nommer een oorgeneem: op slegs sy vierde wegspring in 'n Formule 1-ren het hy die Verenigde State Grand Prix by Watkins Glen International gewen, en sodoende verseker dat Jochen Rindt (postuum) die wêreldtitel wen, deur sy grootste mededinger, Jacky Ickx, van die nodige punte te ontneem.

Die jongste wêreldkampioen

In 1972 het Fittipaldi die heersende Wêreldkampioen Jackie Stewart verslaan. Hy het in die jaar vyf Grand Prix-oorwinnings behaal in die heeltemal herstileerde en bygewerkte Lotus 72: die rooi en goud van Gold Leaf het plek gemaak vir die baie opvallende en eksklusiewe swart en goud van John Player Special. Op 25 jaar en 99 dae was hy die jongste wêreldkampioen in die geskiedenis. Hy het hierdie titel eers in 2005 aan Fernando Alonso verloor. (L.w. Sedert 2010 kan Sebastian Vettel homself die jongste wêreldkampioen in die geskiedenis noem.)

Oorskakel na McLaren

Vir 1974 vertrek hy na McLaren. Daar het hy sy tweede wêreldtitel in die laaste wedren van die seisoen verower in 'n kop-aan-kop tweestryd met Clay Regazzoni (Ferrari) en Jody Scheckter (Tyrrell).

In 1975 het Niki Lauda koning gekraai in sy Ferrari 312T. Fittipaldi se 1973 McLaren M23 het goed begin, maar het 'n swak middelseisoen gehad. Dit was eers teen die einde van die jaar, ná die nodige meganiese en aërodinamiese opdaterings, dat die motor weer met Ferrari kon meeding en Fittipaldi het die tweede plek in die wedren behaal met 'n sterk eindpoging in Monza (Italië) en Watkins Glen (Verenigde State). Hy eindig tweede in 1975 se Wêreldkampioenskap.
