Pous Johannes XVII is gebore as Giovanni Sicco in Rome, Italië. Op 16 Mei 1003 volg hy Pous Silvester II op en regeer tot sy dood op 6 November 1003. Hy word opgevolg deur Pous Johannes XVIII. Die naam ‘Johannes’ beteken 'God is genadig'.

Pous Johannes XVII is verkies deur die invloed van Johannes III Crescentius. Voor sy verkiesing was hy getroud en het drie seuns gehad wat biskoppe geword het[1]. Die pous het die sendingwerk onder die Slawiese volke ondersteun. Die vorige pous met die naam Johannes was Pous Johannes XV. Pous Johannes XVI was 'n teenpous, maar die nommer XVI is nie weer gebruik nie omdat Teenpous Johannes XVI aangestel is deur Johannes II Crescentius die vader van Johannes III Crescentius..
